Shiatsu
Shiatsu means 'finger pressure' in Japanese and works to similar principles as acupuncture but uses massage, stretches and touch rather than needles. It is non-invasive and a pleasant and invigorating treatment to receive. The client is treated fully clothed on a futon on the floor, pressure is applied to meridians and acupuncture points, gentle stretches release the body, and realignment takes place of the energetic system. Through working on the energy lines of the body, muscles, joints and internal organs can also be restored to health. It treats the underlying cause of dis-ease and discomfort.

Shiatsu developed in Japan combining the healing arts of hands on healing, and the sophisticated medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and incorporates western physiology and pathology within the context of Oriental medicine. It can help with a wide range of problems, including muscular skeletal problems such as backache and frozen shoulder, digestive problems, stress, anxiety, depression, menstrual disorders and other complaints.

Diagnosis is very important, and each treatment plan is unique and tailored for the individual client. The client’s health is assessed through a oral consultation, the palpation of the stomach and by the examination of the tongue, face and back.

Shiatsu is about finding the right support for people, releasing tension and old patterns, and of providing the space to allow the body’s natural equilibrium to re-emerge. It is working with the body, rather than against it. Unlike western medicine, the body is not treated as a piece of mechanics, to which is applied a spanner or drug to fix the problem. Rather dis-ease is treated as a symptom of dis-harmony and shiatsu works to relieve the underlying causes of that, and bring the bodymind gently back to health. After a Shiatsu the client will feel relaxed, centred and balanced. Lifestyle recommendations are given, as the clients whole life is considered as worthy of consideration. So diet, work, relationships are as important to health as exercise and the condition of the body.

This holistic approach is an excellent way to restore well-being, and relieve the stresses of modern life. Shiatsu can change our lives and bring us back to wholeness, happiness and health.

GUASHA, CUPPING AND MOXIBUSTION

Guasha and Cupping are popular in China, and are used for the relief of colds, muscle tightness, headaches and tension. Guasha uses a jade stone rubbed onto the skin with oil, and it releases stagnation from the muscles and  acupuncture points. Cupping is an intense method of releasing the muscle, drawing the stagnation to the surface through creating a vacuum on the surface of the skin with a cup. It is also excellent for colds and tightness in the muscle.

Moxibustion uses heat in close proximity to acupuncture points to restore energy where lacking, and is also very good for colds.
